With ‘The Office’ show and one of many Michael’s quotes, ‘sometimes I’ll start a sentence, and I don’t even know where it’s going. I just hope I find it along the way.’
Exactly like that, but I would add a lot more made up sayings, all kinds of nonsense, adventures, hawaiian shirts, actually a lot of hawaiian shirts, and… that’s about it. Okay, there’s more, but, how did I even get into a world of photography?
‘Sicily is clue to everything’
Let’s put it like this, I quit my job as salesperson to go on a trip to Sicily, where I ‘discovered’ street photography and started seeing photography with new eyes. I feel free to say that I’ve fallen in love, as in photography, as in the island itself. I mean, Goethe did say, ‘Sicily is clue to everything’, and it is the truth.
On the trip, I was accompanied by Marin Mamuza, landscape photographer from Livno and my first photographic role model. I always admired his photographs of Livno landscape.
But, photography for me was only a hobby and I was only interested in nature. Until I came to that island, to Sicily. Culture, people, the soul that that island has, it’s villages, cities, indescribable.
Robert Capa
Upon arrival to the airport, I stumbled upon poster of Robert Capa’s photos exhibition. It was the first time I familiarized myself with his work. That’s when I started to learn more about photojournalism and all of the sudden realized…
That is what I want to do in my life, those are the photographs I want to be making. So I shot my first street photos in the streets of Palermo, Corleone, Noto…
Now, few years later, I am finishing journalism study in Zagreb, and at the same time, I am working as a photojournalist for Pixsell photo & video agency.
If I would have to single out one moment from my work, it would be photographing Croatian Football Cup finale in 2022., and HNK Hajduk Split’s long waited title celebration after beating Rijeka. To be down there on the pitch, to feel the atmosphere of oldest European fans, Torcida, pitch invasion, the whole celebration… absolute madness!
What’s the story with the shirts?
As I like to say, all you need in life is Buena Vista Social Club, cuban cigars, rum, sandy beaches, sandals, and… well hawaiian shirts.
I’m a kind of guy that’s really hard not to notice. Hawaiian shirts are my trademark, signature, the thing people recognize me wherever I am. It goes as far as one of my many nicknames, that friends gave me, was Miami Vice, so…
Although, there’s no particular story with that. I just happen to like Latin America’s culture, music, people, climate… So it’s kind of logical that I will dress in that way. Okay, maybe not, since I live in Croatia where winters are pretty cold, but for me – it is, and hand to heart, I am pretty illogical guy.
‘Moron, you’re crazy’
I remember my first ‘one hundred’ on a bike. I went on a bicycle ride on an empty stomach, took one Snickers with me, just like that, and one bottle of water. Of course I bonked (when your legs run out of fuel :D) and barely got to my home for the last twenty kilometers. Lesson learned!
Now, I’m not sure about you, but for me it is pretty normal to wake up at 4 am, cook some pasta, sit on my bike, and cycle for more than ten hours.
Or, as soon as I recovered from Coronavirus and with consequent problems with breathing, I decided to ran my first half-marathon ever. As we say in Croatia, ‘ko nema u glavi, ima u nogama’, which would translate to somewhat of, ‘who doesn’t have (intelligence) in head, has it (strenght) in legs’.
Can’t get rest
I can never take a break and rest, always doing something. So, in my free time, besides photography that’s job, hobby, passion, love, hate, all in one, I use it for running, cycling, preparing marathons or just long cycling trips.
